Sudden Infant Death Syndrome

SIDS

SIDS is the greatest single cause of death among infants between the ages of one week and one year of age. The exact causes of SIDS are unknown, but the the steps below are important, and could save a life. Deaths almost always occur during sleep.

Facts about cot death:

Most occur between two to four months of age.

* Most commonly occur in winter months.

* Fewer than 1% of deaths occur in infants under the age of two months.

* SIDS in boys is more common.

* A low birth weight in babies can put them at a higher risk.

Below are the nine key ways to help reduce the risk of SIDS

  1. No pillows or duvets in the crib.

  2. Use a new mattress.

  3. Keep room temperature between 18-20 degrees C.

  4. Keep crib free of toys and clutter.

  5. Place baby on his/her back to sleep.

  6. Keep your baby in your room for the first six months.

  7. DO NOT share a bed with your baby.

  8. Use cotton bedding only.

  9. Always place your baby in the crib on his/her back in the Feet to Foot position, keeping baby's feet close to the bottom of the crib.

  10. Since the introduction of the Back To Sleep Campaign in the UK, the number of SIDS deaths have been reduced by 75%.
