Post Natal/Postpartum Depression


Depression can broadly be divided into 2 sub groups (not to be confused with baby blues which ususally seen on days 3-6 Post Natally)


Neuroses- The individual is depressed but at the same time is still in touch with reality.
Psychoses- Puerperal (Post-Natal) psychoses is very rare (2 per 1000 births), but shuld be treated as an emergency.

The mother and baby should not be left unattended. There could be impairment of perception, delusions or hallucinations. In most cases of post natal depression, (thought to be as many as 1 in 10) women will suffer from varying degrees of neurotic symptoms.

Listed below are some of the signs of Postpartum/Post Natal Depression

  1. Lowering of mood

  2. Feelings of inadequacy and inablility to cope.

  3. Feelings that they cannot love their baby although the mother obviously cares for the infant.

  4. Guilt about mothering skills.

  5. Tearfulness and constant tiredness.

  6. Sleep disturbances with difficulty in achieving sleep and early morning waking.


  7. If any of these seem familiar seek help from your midwife, Dr or Health Visitor.
